Triassic

Age Interval:
Early Triassic (Induan)

Province:
Madagascar

Type Locality and Naming

Morondava Basin and Majunga Basin (Madagascar). Named after the Sakamena region in Madagascar. It represents the middle stratigraphic division of the Sakamena Group within the Karoo-aged retroarc and rift basins of western and northwestern Madagascar. Synonym:

Lithology and Thickness

Composed predominantly of fine-to-medium clastic sediments, including marine-influenced shales, siltstones, and mudstones, frequently preserving hard siltstone nodules.

Lithology Pattern:
Claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably overlies the continental-to-lacustrine strata of the Lower Sakamena Gr

Upper contact

Conformably succeeds into the terrestrial-to-shallow-clastic successions of the Upper Sakamena Gr.

Regional extent

Widespread across the Morondava and Majunga basins along the western and northwestern margins of Madagascar. Beaufort Group equivalent (specifically aligning with Early Triassic recovery and transition units).
